During this special time of year, late December to Early April, Humpback Whales come to mate and give birth in the calm waters of Kona. There is no better way to see them than with Kona's year round marine mammal excursion experts. Shore spoters will guide the boat to the best Whale viewing areas, our narrator and crew will enlighten you with historical facts and information on the many points of interest along the way as well as the the animals encountered. We will be offering Kona Cetacean Research Progam survey cards to those who wish to participate in the survey. You can help us record numbers and markings of Humpback Whales as well as any other marine mammals encountered, suck as Pilot Whales, Bottlenose Dolphins, etc. Have your camera ready for your first whale encounter as you watch these amazing animals up close. Some of the activities we see are breaching, spy hopping, pectoral fin slapping, tail slappings, mating behavior and mothers caring for their yound. Listen to the whale songs produced by these majestic mammals through our underwater hydrophone.

Delivered in fall of 2007, the 70 ft Spirit of Kona was designed and built to enhance our Eco tour experience. Designed to allow maximum viewing of marine life above and below the surface of the ocean. It features 360-degree walk around viewing on both decks. The Spirit of Kona is a 150 passenger vessel weighing 78 gross tons. This wide heavy platform makes for a comfortable and stable ride. Its slower cruising speed not only saves on fuel consumption but allows for more safety for those marine animals that are subject to boat strikes. With men/women's toilets, premium bar and buffet station, and hydrophone and speaker system, the Spirit is a fabulous boat for catching and learning about the incredible humpback whales during their seasonal visit to the Big Island..

DRY - Kona Manta Rays with Glass Bottom Spirit of Kona

Giant Manatas perform an underwater ballet while you stay dry, safe, cozy and comfortable on the decks of the glass bottom boat, Spirit of Kona. High intensity lights illuminate the underwater scene. Watch through the large glass bottom windows as the giant manta ray enters and feeds on the plankton forming near the lights under the boat. Seen up close and just inches from the glass, the experience is fabulous. Snap photographs and video to take home to share with your family and friends, and do it all while enjoying your favorite cocktail or soft drink.

On board the MV Makai you can settle in the cushy comfort of the upper deck as we cruise to the evenings Manta site. Along the way you can enjoy the scenic Kona coast as our crew pampers you with snacks and beverages. Upon arrival, you move to the lower "wet" deck and prepare for the experience of a lifetime. Manta Rays often swim within inches of our guests as they hold on to our specially designed "Circle of Light" viewing frame. This frame offers you guests the opportunity for a better view and allows for a safer encounter with the Mantas, since human contact such as accidental kicking or touching of the Mantas is greatly reduced.
