Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is one of the most popular natural attractions in the world. It is a natural crescent beach in the sunken caldera of a dormant volcano. The bay is protected by the walls of volcanic formation and the waters are pure and clear to provide ideal environment for fish and other marine wild life. If you are lucky, you may encounter turtles. The inner reef beach area is wide and clear from zero to about 13 ft and perfect for children and casual snorkeling while the outside reef portion is from 13 ft to 30+ ft A fun challenge for more advanced snorkelers.
The City and County of Honolulu started to take necessary steps to protect the bay, and in 2002, they built the Marine Educational Center consisting of marine displays of wild life in the bay, educational video theatre, and other facilities.
Viewing the educational video is mandatory to inform the general public geological and historical background of the bay and at the same time, to educate the tourists of the importance protecting the Hanauma Bay.
