Rappelling and Waterfall Hike 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. |

From our meeting spot in Central Maui, we drive you a half-hour to the northeast side of West Maui. Beginning at 1000 feet in altitude, hike with us through stands of tree bamboo to the top of a steep 40-foot hillside. After an easy set of instructions, rappel down just to get comfortable with the equipment. This first rappel is optional, and you may skip it if you don't need it. Hike back up a steep ridge, using ropes tied between trees for assistance. After more instructions, now that you're self-assured, drop off the edge of a 50-foot cliff and rappel to the bottom. Once again climb up the steep ridge trail and then rappel down again. Then hike down the valley to the top of a 60-foot cliff, where you can do a guided rappel--similar to a zip line, but much steeper. From a heart-stopping perch above the tops of the forest of big trees down in the valley, begin with an easy descent down to the top of the cliff. Soon your feet leave the ground and you're floating above a sudden dropoff as you rappel down 150 feet to the bottom of the canyon. Then do it again! After all this excitement, hike down a serene canyon to a water slide into a pool. There's an optional jump off an 8-foot cliff into another pool. Then climb down a 15-foot cliff while hanging onto the roots of a large banyan tree to the bottom of a 20-foot waterfall and swim in a pool above a 30-foot waterfall. Lunch is served at one of the pools and waterfalls. The final hike back out is about a mile along a good trail with a 350-foot ascent. Along the way you'll enjoy some impressive views back down into the valley and out to sea.
We make sure that you can't fall by having two guides per tour. One guide provides you with instructions and as much help as you need and makes sure you're properly hooked in at the top. The other guide does a fireman's belay at the bottom. If you get into trouble, he can stop you immediately. Then you can either recover and continue on your own, or he can lower you gently. The guide at the top can also bring you back up, depending on what's needed.
Observers, who do not want to rappel, may participate in the hike, swim and lunch for a discounted rate.
