Damien Tour with scenic hike and flight from Maui

Take a scenic tour from Maui arriving on topside Molokai where your guide will be waiting to take you to the peninsular of Kalaupapa. The shuttle is another 15 mins, where a short safety briefing will be conducted and what to expect on the trail. The trail is approximately 2.9 miles one way but the body thinks it is more like a good 5 mile hike. Your guide is also knowledgeable on the history of Kalaupapa and sometimes substitutes as the tour driver for Damien Tours. The decent is almost 1700 ft and strain is emphasized on the knees and ankles. It is advisable to bringing hiking sticks or please let us know in advance so that we can have some local style sticks available.

Once in the settlement which can take from 1-2 hours in hiking time, our guide will check everyone on to the Damien Tour bus where Damien Tours will then take over.

The flight time to the Main Molokai airport is approx 28 minutes. The return flight up will take you back either to Molokai airport to drop off people on Molokai or directly back to Kapalua or Maui.

The air tour will show you the longest fringing reef in the US along with the highest sea cliffs in the world, viewing waterfalls, spectacular valleys, and gorgeous ocean views of the dazzling reef that protects Molokai?s southern shores.

On arriving in Kalaupapa, there will be an approximate four-hour bus tour before another scenic air tour back to Maui.

This trip is only for those that truely want a great hiking experience as well as learning the history of Kalaupapa. This fabulous trip is only for the extremely physically fit visitor over 16 years old. Average hiking time is 1.5 hours down. Lunch and beverages are included.

YOU MUST BE PHYSICALLY FIT AND IN GOOD CONDITION FOR THIS TRIP.

In the 1850?s when Hansen's disease, formerly known as Leprosy, swept through the Hawaiian Isles the worst cases were sent to this isolated peninsula. In 1873, Father Damien arrived and was revered for his infinite love for the residents of Kalaupapa.

The bus in Kalaupapa will pick you up from the airport and take you through the new settlement with the sites of St Frances Church, Mother Marianne's gravesite, and the visitor center.

Damien Tours takes one to the old settlement that Father Damien founded. Here one will get to visit St Philomena's church, which Father Damien built. Father Damien?s gravesite is next to the church. Visitors can also walk to Siloama protestant church, the first church to be built in Kalawao

Kalawao back to the Settlement

After lunch, the bus will take the group back to the airport where the plane will be waiting. We can do up to 3 scenic flights and we are currently using 6 passenger planes where comfort prevails with perfect scenic viewing, each seat getting a personal window. We suggest that customers bring some good reading material in the event of waiting time at the airport. However, Kalaupapa airport is a place where one can sit quite happily and stare at the beauty of the majestic sea cliffs rising in the distance.
