Hawaii Army Museum ~ Fort DeRussy ~ Oahu

Helicopters, tanks, guns now silenced, and vacant bunkers welcome you to the U.S. Army Museum of Hawai'i. Once a bastion built to protect Hawai'i from invading forces, the structure now houses a Museum that tells the military story of Hawai'i, from ancient times to the Gulf War and the War in Iraq. Each of these hostilities is covered graphically in separate displays with photographs and sound effect creating a real "you were there" experience.

Located on the grounds of the Hale Koa Hotel and the Ft. DeRussy Recreation Center.

Open Tuesday - Saturday from 9:00 AM until 4:45 PM. Admission is FREE however donations are always welcomed and appreciated.
Audio Tours are available for rent at $5 each ($2.50 for Society Members)

Parking:We validate parking for the US Army Museum of Hawaii @ Fort DeRussy Parking Facilities. With validation the fee is:
$2.00 for the first hour (or fraction thereof)
$1.25 for each additional hour (or fraction thereof)

Kona Historical Society - Portuguese Bread Baking - Kona, Big Island

The Kona Historical Society Portuguese Stone Oven is a reproduction of a typical oven used by the Portuguese immigrants who came to Kona in the 1880's. Join the process of panning the dough and baking 96 loaves of the traditional Sweet, White and Whole Wheat. plus cinnamon bread.

The Great Buddha ~ Lahaina Jodo Mission ~ Maui

This 12 foot tall copper and bronze statue of Amida Buddha is the largest of its kind located outside of Japan. Originally cast in Kyoto, Japan in 1967-1968 it weighs approximately 3 1/2 tons. The Great Buddha was completed in June 1968 as commemorative project for the Centennial Celebration of the first Japanese immigrants to arrive in Hawaii.

The statue was restored in 1997 by Mrs. Masao Omori in memory of her late husband.

Kaanapali Cliff Diving Ceremony - Maui

As the sun begins to set, the time honored tradition of Maui's Chief Kahekili's leap of spiritual strength begins. Legend tells us that the last Chief of Maui proved his spiritual stength by leaping off of the sacred Pu'u Keka'a, Black Rock, into the waters below.
Since the opening of the Sheraton Maui in 1963, this nightly ritual has taken place everyday at sunset on the World famous Kaanapali Beach, Maui.
FREE to the public, this time honored tradition begins with a native Hawaiian Chant, the blowing of the conch announces the young diver's arrival. He will slowly make his way to the top of the cliff lighting torches along the way. Watch the diver offer his torch and a flower lei to the ocean, before taking his plunge into the waters below.

The International Marketplace was founded in 1956 by Ernest Raymond Beaumont Gantt, more famously and simply known as Donn Beach or notably Don the Beachcomber.

Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts ~ Oahu

Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (HiSAM) has been nicknamed the "People's Museum". HiSAM has four galleries - the Diamond Head Gallery, the Ewa Gallery, the Sculpture Lobby and the Sculpture Garden. Admission is FREE.

Hours of Operation are:
Tuesday - Saturday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Museum is closed on Sunday and Monday and all State and Federal Holidays.
The Museum is open on First Friday, a downtown gallery walk held on the first Friday of each month, from 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM ~ Galleries close at 8:30 PM

Visitor Guidelines include:
No smoking, no food or drinks, no touching of the art displays, no cell phones, pagers and animals (Trained assistance animals are permitted). Large bags must be checked in with security, no flash photography.

Nightly Hula Show at Kaanapali Beach Hotel - Maui

Kula Country Farms ~ Maui

Kula Country Farms is a local farming family that is fourth generation to farming in Kula. They grow the most flavorful produce varieties using the best farming techniques to produce them.
Kula Country Farms also offers year round themed events that are open to the public. Most popular is the Annual Pumpkin Patch, Corn Field Maze, and Strawberry Field Picking. Items can be purchased at these events.
Kula Country Farms produce stand offers their produce along with other island farmers fruits, vegetables, flowers, jams, jellies and fresh baked goods for sale.

Lanai Culture Heritage Center - Lanai

Visit the Lanai Culture Heritage Center to view the large collection of Hawaiian artifacts collected through archaeological investigations, items found by plantation employees over the years, and family memorabilia donated to CHC.

The Lanai Culture & Heritage Center seeks to inspire people to be informed, thoughtful and active stewards of Lanai's heritage by preserving, interpreting and celebrating its natural history, Hawaiian traditions, diverse heritage and cultures, and ranching and plantation era histories.

Admission is FREE, however donations are welcomed and greatly appreciated.

Molokai Museum & Cultural Center

The Molokai Museum and Cultural Center was the home of German professor
Rudolph W. Meyer and high Molokai Chieftess Kalama in 1878. They began the place and operated a small sugar plantation. The mill was restored by the National Register of Historic Places. It features a century-old steam engine, redwood evaporating pans, mule-powered cane crusher, and copper clarifiers.

Munro Trail - Lanai

The Munro Trail is a 12.8 mile hiking, biking, and driving trail named after George Munro, the New Zealand naturalist who arrived in 1890 and introduced the majestic Cook pine trees.
The trail can only be driven in a rented 4-wheel drive vehicle and can also be hiked or biked. This trail offers spectacular views of the neighboring islands and takes you through a rain forest filled with Ironwood, Eucalyptus, Ohia Lehua, and Pine Trees. At the top of the trail you will get to experience Lanai Hale - Lanai's highest peak at 3,370 feet.
Please note that conditions are tricky in some spots especially after rain. DO NOT drive if conditions are muddy. Bring a jacket, food, water and make sure your vehicle has a full tank of gas.

Puako Petroglyph Archaeological Preserve - Big Island

Ancient Hawaiians called their stone art - Ki'i Pohaku: stone art. The Puako Petroglyph is home to one of the most extensive petroglyph fields in Hawaii and feature thousands of images. Families, marchersm dancers, even dogs, chickens, and deity's. A great activity to see with the entire Ohana (family).

Located on the Kohala Coast near the Mauna Lani Resort, there are over a thousand Ki'i Pohaku (petroglyphs) dated back centuries ago. These carvings date back centuries ago and are very culturally significant to the Hawaiian culture. Please visit with the site with the utmost respect.

The field of petrogylphs can be accessed from the Holoholokai beach park in Mauna Lani Resort to the south of Puako. The park can be accessed either by going through the Mauna Lani resort, or via the Puako beachfront southwards from Paniau (utility pole 143) at the south end of Puako road. There are restrooms and shower facilities here.

National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific - Punchbowl - Oahu

More than five million visitors come to "Punchbowl" each year to pay their respects to the brave and heroic men and woman that served our Country, and to enjoy the panoramic view from the Punchbowl. One of the most breathtaking views of the Island of Oahu can be found while standing at the highest point on the crater's rim.
This is a National Memorial Cemetery honoring fallen war hero's and should be visited with the utmost respect.

Star Gazing at Mauna Kea Onizuka VIS - Big Island

The Visitor Information Station (VIS), at the 9,300 foot (2,900 m) level of Mauna Kea, has a nightly stargazing program held every night of the year from 6:00 pm until 10:00 pm.

Sponsored entirely by public donations, this program is conducted FREE of charge and is open to everybody, no reservations needed! Often above the clouds, the night skies at the VIS are often clear and bright, rivaling any other stargazing location in the world!

Please note that we often experience near-freezing night time temperatures at the VIS. Please, dress warmly! (But just in case, warm clothing is available for sale at the Visitor Information Station's First Light Bookstore.) Also, a red-filtered flashlight will help you navigate safely from the parking lot.

Also, please make sure there is a full tank of gas in your vehicle before making the trip up to the Visitor Station. Fuel is NOT available for purchase on Mauna Kea, and the nearest gas stations are about thirty miles away in either Hilo or Waimea.

From Hilo, take the Puainako Extension (Hwy 2000) which merges with Saddle Road (Hwy 200). Just before the 28 mile marker, there is a road to the right and a street sign that says Mauna Kea Access Road. Make the right turn. The station is about 6 miles up the road on the right side of the road. The drive takes approximately 1 hour.
From the Kona side of the island, take Highway 190 heading North toward Waimea. Just before the 6 mile marker, there is a turnoff on the right for Saddle Road (Hwy 200). Take Saddle Road until just after the 28 mile marker. Turn left onto the Mauna Kea Access Road. The station is about 6 miles up the road on the right side of the road. From Waimea, the trip takes about 1 hour, from Waikoloa, the trip takes about 1 1/2 hours, and from Kona, the trip takes about 2 hours.

Escorted Summit Tour To The Top of Mauna Kea - Big Island

Bring your own 4WD Vehicle and join the FREE summit tour caravan.
Escorted Summit Tours are scheduled every Saturday and Sunday (weather permitting). Participants must arrive at the V.I.S. by 1:00 PM. but reservations are not required.
You must provide your own TRUE 4-wheel-drive vehicle with LOW Range to participate in the tour. If renting, confirm with your rental company that your vehicle has a separate LOW range.
The Station does not provide any transportation to the summit.
The Caravan to the summit begin after the orientation. It is about a half an hour drive and the speed limit is 25 miles an hour. The tour will go into at least one of the Mauna Kea Observatories and will end between 4:15 and 4:30 pm on the summit.
Very important note: Be sure that you have a full tank of fuel in the vehicle you are driving to Mauna Kea. The steep grade combined with the lower oxygen level makes internal combustion engines run inefficiently. Fuel is NOT available for purchase on Mauna Kea!
SUMMIT TOUR REQUIREMENTS
All participants in the Summit Tour must have their own 4-wheel drive transportation to the summit.
Everyone must be at least 16 years of age
No one may be pregnant.
Persons who are extremely over-weight, in poor health, and those with a history of heart or respiratory problems should check with their personal physician before planning a trip to the summit of Mauna Kea (considered to be HIGH ALTITUDE -- 13,796 feet above sea level).
No one should have been SCUBA diving in the previous 24 hours.
All of these regulations are strictly enforced!
Please call the road report number, (808) 935 - 6268, to hear a recording of the current road conditions on the summit. The summit tour will happen as long as the road is open. However, the road is subject to closure at any time if bad weather should occur.

Want to get married while in Hawaii? You first must apply for your Marriage License. Both the bride and groom must fill out the application, Two (2) valid forms of ID will be needed and your officiant must be licensed to perform marriages in the State of Hawaii.

West Kauai Technology & Visitor Center ~ Kauai

The West Kauai Technology Center is located in the beautiful town of Waimea. The Visitor Center features exhibits and programs of it historical and present agricultural community.

FREE Historic Waimea Walking Tour - Offered every Monday at 9:30AM. Registration is required in advance. This 3 hour guided walking tour takes you back in time. Learn about the last King of Kauai, missionaries, see historic landmarks and learn about the agricultural history of Waimea. Must call no later than 12 Noon the Friday before to schedule your tour.

Sign up for a FREE lei making class and Learn how Taro is turned into POI and how salt is made on Kaua'i the traditional Hawaiian way. Call to register for this FREE class by 12 Noon on the Thursday prior.

Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo & Gardens ~ Hilo, Big Island

The only natural tropical rainforest zoo in the United States is located in Hilo on the Big Island. Home to Namaste, a white male Bengal tiger and more than 80 animal species.
Admission is FREE but donations are greatly appreciated and welcomed!

At 3:30 PM daily join Namaste at feeding time where he enjoys a diet of 3 whole chickens, 10 pounds of meat, ground bone and vitamins.
In addition to Namaste, the resident white Bengal tiger, Pana'ewa Zoo is also home to Giant anteaters, toucans, llama, kinkajous, spider monkeys and more.

Every Saturday from 1:30PM-2:30PM enjoy a hands-on experience at the Petting Zoo, there is even a Butterfly House. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the grounds botanical garden under the shade of various trees and palms all planted by volunteers.

Directions:
From Hilo, take Highway 11 (Hawaii Belt Road) South towards Volcano. About two and one half miles past Prince Kuhio Shopping Plaza look for the "ZOO" sign on a lava rock wall, just after "Kulani 19." Turn right on Mamaki.

From Volcano look for "Kulani 19", just beyond it is the sign for the Zoo, a small brown one high above the ground on the right hand side of the highway. Turn left at Mamaki, follow signs to the Zoo, 1 mile off the highway.
